Interested in folks views on how to categorise a multi platform creator. I am just putting together a directory module for the new network and mentors as well as other creatives will have a range of criteria attached to them – so for example if you are searching for someone who is very experience at mobile comics you simply tick the ‘mobile graphic novel’ button –

Apart from the obvious top level categories such as:

    Game Level Design
    Game Writing
    Webisode Writing
    Cross Media Marketing
    Social Media Consultancy
    Collaborative Player Management Tool Design
    Augmented Reality Production (Locative)
    Augmented Reality Production (Marker)
    Social Media Character Writing
    Mobile Casual Network Game Design
    Distributed Story Writing
    Game/Film Adaptation
    ARG Storylining & Design
and so on – I have another 35 of these –

What ones should definitely be in there?

Hey Gary, on an unrelated note, the title of this web page reads “>> Project — My City Stories OPEN”

Now actually on topic, I think tags would work better than categories (unless that’s how your categories work). If we can be in multiple categories, that’s best.

Even with tags or multiple categories, I think we run the risk of getting hung up on semantics / nomenclature as well as potential for misunderstanding. Does “Game Level Design” mean 2D or 3D? Big difference between the two. And where does Game Environmental Design fit in (and does it have to?).

Could we tag ourselves according to the available labs? Might be broad enough for now.

Just writing as a think here…

    Thanks Tony,

I am not sure what the web page ref is about? Wrong title? Confusing? Please clarify…

Re the classification/directory the purpose is about people finding specialists in certain areas for mostly consultancy vs just occasional labs and yes everyone will have multiple tags (in the broadest sense) – agree that there will be confusion potentially in the tag names, which is why we will work on the list until it makes ‘most’ sense. I imagine there will be a list of 40-50 tags in groupings and encourage self designation BUT only in areas you have real experience vs general knowledge…also a rating/recommendation system from folk who know/have used you is possible…what do you think about that aspect?

Web page reference is to what I am seeing in the source code for the page in which this conversation is displayed. The title tag seems to be from a different section of the site — the expected title would be something related to this discussion thread, e.g. “Categories for Transmedia Creators.”

Ok, on the categories front, I do understand the purpose, and I still think broader is better. Also I think ratings is going to be a logistical and social problem. At best I can see a LinkedIn style referral system, but LinkedIn is better equipped for stuff like that. Perhaps with tags we can let users try to self-identify, and somehow facilitate or encourage use of the same tags (e.g. games vs. gaming) based on frequency of usage.

If I could add a couple of MIA tags from my universe: publishing, novel writing, young adult author, children’s writer . . that sort of thing. Lots of great transmedia projects are book-based (Amanda Project, 39 Clues, Trackers) or digital story based (Inanimate Alice).
