This is the provisional schedule and guardian mentor allocations for the Seventh LAMP residential and Story of the Future part two.


SCHEDULE

TUESDAY 6th Nov

  • 12.00 - Gary Jackie as forward team arrival, breakouts, game and main presentations set-up


WEDNESDAY 7th Nov

INNOVATE

  • 9.00 - Gary & Jackie final game prep
  • 1.00 - CHECK-IN AND LUNCH: Quick lunch and check in at Couran Terminal for all teams and mentors
  • 2.30 - ARRIVAL: All teams and other mentors arrive at Eco Resort. Brief island orientation
  • 2.45 - INTRODUCTION & ORIENTATION - p: Gary, Therese, Peter - Formal introductions to the week. Folders, schedule, attitudinal, expectations, outcomes etc:
  • 3.15 - PROJECTS AND TEAM INTRODUCTIONS - p: Mod GH
    • Each team presents who they are, what they expect and their idea. Only 5 minutes each, including short intro to each team member.
  • 4.00 - MENTOR WHATS COOL -p: Mod GH
    • Each mentor has just 5 minutes to show or talk about their Case Study later OR something they find inspiring. This is to set a tone of innovation and also to introduce an aspect of each mentor.
  • 4.45 - EXERCISE/GAME: Intro JT/GH - p.
    • To develop awareness of compelling game-play as Mixed-Media, Cross-Reality . Combined with a unique, distributed narrative quest and story creation.
  • 6.30 - DINNER
  • 7.15 - PRESENTATION (dinner area): Mod JT. Before dessert presentations of game stories by each 'group' sitting in their random teams.
  • 8.00 - Bar and free networking

THURSDAY 8th Nov

IMMERSE

  • 9.15 - ORIENTATION -p: How the week works, adviser allocations, schedule review and review of day to come.
  • 9.30 - PRESENTATION 1 -p: Peter Giles (+ Gary), A range of key New Media Business Models to consider during the week. Sheet of all given out.
  • 10.00 - MENTOR SESSION 1 (guardian) - b:
    • Projects Teams get settled into their own spaces. Consider previous presentation (15m). Guardian mentors join their team and set goals and identify challenges for the week (45m)

    • Each team will pitch cool ideas that have come from today so far cross-reviewed by rotating alternate teams discuss in front of rest of group how the others project could be made more engaging. 5m each
  • 5.00 - MENTOR SESSION 4 (guardian) -b: Reflection time for each group, and after 45 mins a 15 minute pre dinner meet with guardian mentor to see how they are doing and identify issues.
  • 6.00 - DINNER:
  • 7.00 - MENTOR MEETING (bar): Short one hour 'bar' meet with all mentors to identify issues. Free-form non structured. Terese or another collates issues.

FRIDAY 9th Nov

    • Consider previous presentations (30m). Projects Teams now start to consider their proposition particularly the USP, the Jewell, what makes it special with Guardian mentors. (50m)
    • Parallel final session (45m) (tbd) Catherine Gleeson will finish the design thread for designers from each team - CG +8
  • 4.00 - AFTERNOON TEA:
  • 4.15 - EXERCISE -p: Pass the pitch.
    • Each team will be briefed by another one who will then pitch it back to the larger group for them. This brings out nuggets of gold that the team who owns it often don't see. 5m each
  • 5.00 - MENTOR SESSION 8 (guardian) -b: Reflection time for each group, and after 45 mins a 15 minute pre dinner meet with guardian mentor to see how they are doing and identify issues.
  • 6.00 - DINNER:
  • 6.45 - MENTOR MEETING: A 'bar' meet with all mentors to go through each teams issues structured. Terese or another collate.
  • 7.30 - ACTIVITY ALL: Nocturnal walk.

SATURDAY 10th Nov

IDENTIFY

SURF CLUB

  • 7.30 - EVENT: Some shared morning activity to wake brains up!
  • 8.30 - BREAKFAST
  • 9.00 - LOOK AT ME: A short exercise in ways to grab peoples attention both in the project itself but also in presenting it.
  • 9.30 - PRODUCTION RECAP: "How are we doing?" Short recap of outcomes and review of day to come.
    • Focus on shifting into proof of concept mode, thinking design, assets, USP, communicating the idea (JT to do a 10 minute recap of pitching the user journey). All mentors to chip in and all discussion about getting an idea across
  • 10.00 - MENTOR SESSION 9 (guardian) -b: Each team will plan their build schedule, identify what assets need preparing and storyboard the presentation.

OLYMPIC ROOM

  • 10.45 - CYCLE BACK AND MORNING TEA (p) (Developers arrive Matt Smith and Matt Daniels: Arse becomes a dedicated developer and Gary and Catherine to also be key developers).
  • 11.15 - PRESENTATION -p: Tools
    • An overview from a range of presenters (CG,GH,AE and others) of rapid prototyping tools flash, director, NWN, Second Life, various machinima, keynote, powerpoint and web 2.0 open source tools available. Also introduction to mentors skills - each mentor who is able and willing to help with the build phases.
  • 12.00 - PRODUCTION -b: Storyboarding. Teams to continue planning storyboard, focus on achievable, ready for briefs to developers Matt Smith, Daniels, Arse and mentors (doing specific builds eg: virtual spaces). First meeting with developers, Arse to brief new arrivals.
  • 1.15 - LUNCH:
  • 2.00 - PRODUCTION -b: Briefing. With guardians, teams will brief all acting as developers and allocate resources. Guardian will act as production manager if not themselves acting as specialised developer.
  • 3.00 - PRODUCTION -b: Technical begins and mentors each hear a practice pitch from another team?

Gary Hayes - Creator, Producer and Designer of Advanced TV, Virtual Worlds and Cross-Media Service Design Specialist

Short Bio

  • Gary Hayes is currently the Director of the Australian Laboratory for Advanced Media Production, LAMP and Head of Virtual Worlds for the UK based Project Factory. LAMP is an initiative to invigorate the Australian media industry and nurture people and projects across social networks, virtual worlds, games, cross-media and mixed reality. It has a range of blogs and its own Wikipedia cited wiki. The Project Factory create virtual world presences and Story Environments and Gary is responsible for major brand deployments such as recent Telstra BigPond, ABC, Tourism Victoria and educational spaces such as AFTRS and Thursday's Fictions. The Format Factory develop Mixed Reality Formats especially TV and Virtual Hybrid experiences. Gary was previously Senior Development Producer and Manager at BBC New Media from 1995-04 creating many of the interactive and advanced TV firsts, service navigation as well as specialising in personalisation and inhabited worlds - followed by an 18 month stint as Advanced TV Producer based in Santa Barbara. He is also a multi-instrumentalist, composer, singer and amazing photographer - real and virtual!

  • 2006/7 - Second Life, Produced, Designed, Built Virtual Worlds for - Telstra BigPond 11 islands, ABC TV, Tourism Victora Virtual Melbourne, Thursday's Fictions and several cross-reality areas including AFTRS Islands
  • 2005 - Director and key mentor across 54 projects through LAMP. Deep knowledge of all areas of mixed-media, cross-reality.
  • 2004/5 - Broadband and on-demand TV. Line Produced Showtimes L Word PVR service, consultant/designer on CBS and NBC LAX and Law and Order segmented on-demand shows
  • 2000 - 2004 - Senior producer/manager and designer on BBC Interactive TV services. Including the first broadcast interactive 'BBCi' and first true on-demand X-Creatures. Also conceived and directed key interactive TV outings 'Top of the Pops', 'Walking with Beasts', 'Travel Show' and approx. five others. Strategic thinking on global broadcaster evolution to on-demand.
  • 1997 - 2000 - Senior producer on global cross-media navigators, the first BBC Live Internet Documentary (Central Asia), Early Virtual Worlds, Web streaming and producer/designer on landmark 'experience' projects including A State Apart (POV on N Ireland) and Bach (immersive world of JS Bach).

Presented all over the world - keynotes ranging from personalization futures, cross-media storytelling, business in virtual worlds and advanced television. Rapid Prototyping Skills

  • 3D worlds - Build quick 'look feel' mockups in 3D worlds including Second Life and Never Winter Nights plus machinima. Also SketchUp and Google Earth.
  • Music - Compose given good brief from orch through techno and intermediate sound design. Logic/reason/live etc:
  • Web 2.0 - Setup quick wordpress blogs, wikis, forums, podcasts, standard websites IF function is needed for demo
  • Rich Media - Fluent director user for mockups of video portals or advanced TV demos.
  • Graphics/editing - Photoshop, Final Cut, Video Conversion, AfterEffects.
  • Voice Overs - Can do decent doco style English voice overs and if pushed some English characters ;-)
